We got in touch with Mark and asked him additional questions about his work. Characters from the “Pain Train” series are frequently distinct and endearing. We were curious about the artist’s process for creating characters that mesh well with the style of his comics. We discovered that: “I believe the majority of my comic strips began with the main character already in mind. It was either a certain face or ‘voice’ I was envisioning when I wrote the punchline, meaning there wasn’t much development until the comic was sketched out. Webcomics, in my opinion, force character development to happen organically over time. As a result, a one-off character is likely to be rather two-dimensional and only serve as a vehicle for a single joke; recurrent characters, on the other hand, have the opportunity to grow deeper layers via repetition.
