It is important to treat everyone with respect but at times, it doesn’t happen and it may occur in the wrong way horribly. One black Chick-fil-A customer was left feeling humiliated and disgusted after seeing his order ticket.
52-year-old Marquise Vanzego was visiting a Chick-fil-A restaurant in his home state, Maryland. He was there to order some food on August 23 but he got called out on his order ticket
He said that he was speaking to a “young white male” at the drive-through to order some chicken strips, fries, and an Arnold Palmer. The order was taken face-to-face and not over the intercom.
When the employee asked for his name, he replied: Marquise. After the order was given to them, he saw that the guest name had been filled in with the word, “Monkeys.” This has been a racial slur against black people for a number of years.
He said it was devastating, Vanzego goes on to say: “It just set me back years. As a Vlack male, we’ve gone through a lot, and it’s a constant reminder, just when you think you’re healing from a situation, someone opens that wound back up.”
He also wrote to Chick-fil-A and said that he had clearly communicated his name. He went on social media to share it as well, including a video of him talking to the store manager.
The woman apologized in the video and said his meal would be refunded. He then uploaded a second video, where he records himself going into the restaurant and explaining he wanted to confront the employee. The other staff said that he was not able to do so.
Vanzego then questioned the owner if he had ever heard of a human being named monkey. He feels as if not enough is being done about the situation.
In speaking on TODAY, he said: “I understand, he’s a young man, he’s 17, he’s still learning.
“But he also needs to know that there are consequences when you do things like that.” In speaking about his own children who are now adults, he says, “When they did things, they had to deal with the consequences.”
It has yet to be seen if this was an honest mistake or if it was a racist remark. Chick-fil-A did say that the experience did not meet their expectations and is unacceptable.
