Hello everyone, my name is Steven Garza. I am a professional standup comedian and joke teller. I’m always exploring for new ways to share my humor. Cartooning progressed slowly for me. It was an idea I toyed with for years but never pursued. After years of procrastinating, I finally decided to attempt it. The only problem was that I did not know how to sketch. Seven years ago, I went into Blick’s to buy a drawing pad and pencils. When I sat at home and started putting pencil to paper, I realized that this cartoon thing was not going to be easy. After a few years of practice with “How To” books and countless pages of crumpled-up paper, I finally started uploading them online. Surprisingly, I received some nice feedback.

Fret Buzzed is a comic strip featuring dual characters. On the one hand, the four-panel strip tells the narrative of two middle-aged failing musicians who are desperately attempting to keep their dream alive while juggling grownup responsibilities. Fret Buzzed single-panel gags are a different story. I use these for any unusual thoughts that function better as non-sequiturs. However, the two occasionally overlap. Characters from my four-panel strip appear in my single-panels.I prefer to think of it as Easter eggs for people who are familiar with my work. Readers who are familiar with the characters will see them in ludicrous situations outside of the storyline.

I come up with cartoon ideas in a variety of ways. If I’m lucky, an idea will come to me at random. Although unusual, it’s like receiving a gift in which the joke has already been bundled with a punchline and handed to me with a neat little bow on top. It’s as if a gag has been handed to me fully constructed, with no effort on my side. For the majority of my cartoons, I generate ideas by sketching and merging random subjects, scenarios, and characters. When I come up with an interesting or unique topic or situation, I pretend to converse with the characters in my head. This doesn’t always result in a joke, but it does help me determine whether the gag is amusing. If not, it will frequently point me in a different path, presenting fresh alternatives.
