If you want to share some humorous jokes with your grandparents, look no further! Doug Hill, a 76-year-old comic artist, continues to illustrate semi-realistic one-panel comics that over 5000 Instagram followers love.

Doug’s comics, known as the Laughing Hippo Studio, are packed with puns, wife-husband gags, and other real-life humor. In a recent interview, the artist revealed a little more about his chosen topics: “I create a lot of family-themed cartoons because I have three children, five grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Other ideas stem from what is popular among people or in the news. Everyday occurrences taken out of context are one of my favorites. I enjoy coming up with ideas, producing cartoons, and seeing people enjoy it.

They may have affected one another due to their 30-year teaching career, which included cartooning and animation instruction. Doug discussed how his background as an instructor influenced or changed his approach to creating comics.

“I don’t think being an art teacher affected my cartoons (other than providing ideas); rather, I believe my cartooning influenced my teaching. When I taught junior high, I always included a cartooning component, and when I taught high school, I emphasized cartooning and animation. Doug wrote: “I was very lucky to have a ROP class in those areas.”
